In my work, I depict scenes of nature in periods of changing or low light. I use long exposures to capture the glorious colors of nature, from sunsets and sunrises to the magic of the Aurora Borealis and everything in between. I present the images as windows to other places, drawing the viewer into the image and allowing them to feel as if they could step away from their current situation if they want to, even if just for a minute. My images rarely contain people, reflecting the beauty of the world around us.

I sometimes start with an image in my head that I want to capture, but much of my work stems from being in the right place at the right time with the right equipment to capture light in all its incarnations. I study maps, weather projections (both terrestrial and space-based), and the locations of astronomical bodies, and try to find locations I’ve not been to before. Then I get to the location with my gear, staying open to new possibilities on the way. I may find something totally unexpected, and that’s part of the wonder of photography and creativity to me.

Many of my photos are captured on trips to the North Shore of Lake Superior. I have been spending time up there for 20 years and am still amazed by the big lake, the rugged coastline, and the surrounding land. I love seeing just how dark a night sky can really be and how much it can be lit up by the presence of the Moon, the Milky Way arching overhead, or the Northern Lights. I feel a sense of peace being in these places – a chance to detach from the high-stress world we consider normal. It restores my soul, and in my art, I try to capture these feelings to share and bring back into our homes so that we can all partake in this restoration.
