Following my Muse has taken me on a circuitous path through different materials and mediums. I consider myself to be a painter although for decades I have been working in stone, wood, glass, and then back to paper and pigment. I don’t utilize three-dimensional materials as a sculptor would. I leave the base shape of the materials untouched and utilize surface applications of color and texture much as a painter affects canvas. I present a carnival of mythological narrative drawing deeply from superstitions, historical and contemporary mythology along with cultural folklore icons. I often include allegorical imagery or elements of magical symbolism.  My work features symbolic rather than realistic color, symbols instead of perceived reality, ideas rather than direct observation. In the end, my philosopher’s stone is made of pigment, paper, stone and bone, involving spiritual and folkloric elements and the search for meaning that extends through generations.

Work in Stone

Cairns, or Stacked Stones are one of the oldest forms of mankind’s artistic expression. Although I principally consider myself to be a painter for decades I have been also working in stone. I don’t address stone as a sculptor would. Typically I add surface applications leaving the natural shape untouched much as a painter affects canvass. The stone stacks are built to order and pricing will vary. I’d be happy to build one or two or three for you!

3 Standing Stones

These three stones were inspired by tattoo patterns from different cultures. Sold as a group they are suitable inside or out. I will never be able to recreate such a grouping. It was too much work!

This item is available for curbside pickup or shipping.

Carved and Gilded Flock

It’s a beautiful stone that I have enhanced using a flock of birds both in-carved and bas relief, the birds in raised pattern have been covered in copper foil and treated with Liver of Sulfur to blacken them.

This item is available for curbside pickup or shipping.

Murder of Crows

The flock of crows on this piece are carved in Bas- Relief with the flock circling the stone like the stripes on a barber pole. The crows have been covered in a thin layer of copper that has then been treated with Liver of Sulfur to blacken them. It’s rare that a piece comes out just about exactly how you imagined it !

Krampus and Perchten

In Germany and throughout much of the Alps, Jolly Old St Nick has an evil helper named Krampus. While Santa brings gifts to the good children, Krampus punishes the wicked. Krampus is one member of the race of Perchten, in this tradition the young men of the village carve elaborate wooden masks and help frighten winter out of the village. Doing my part to add to the narrative I have carved some Krampus and Perchten for your enjoyment.

Traditional Krampus

Springbok horns, Glass Eyes, Red hair extensions, a mix of natural teeth combined with a long red leather tongue. What better way to bring in a Joyous Yule Season ?

This item is available for curbside pickup or shipping.

Wolf Tooth

What a smile! Wolf Tooth with natural hair extensions and Springbok horns. Made from a beautiful piece of Maple. I like to use green wood and encourage it to crack before adding a finish to bring out the grain.

This item is available for curbside pickup or shipping.

Long Neck, Big Smile

She has a particular charm. This was the point where I decided to manufacture my own glass eyes because the ones I was finding just weren’t ‘Painterly’ enough. The knot in this log just spoke to me as a nose.

This item is available for curbside pickup or shipping.

Fillings

Always looking to add significance to each piece I was lucky to come across actual human teeth complete with fillings! This Perchten got snached up right away!

Darkness Becomes Her

The Darkness is becoming her more and more. Using an antique Ebonizing process involving vinegar and steel wool I am blackening her beauty even now. Contact me for more pictures.

Stumpy

Stumpy was pretty much pre built. I gathered this log which already pretty much had the ears, nose, mouth and chin. Cleaned him up a bit, gave him a neck, horns and horse hair and he’s always been a crowd favorite, and the heaviest of the bunch !

Bag of Bones

Created as a novelty product for the Oddities and Curiosities Extravaganza, this year’s cancellation of that event makes these lovelies available to you!  You will receive one yellow cloth 4″ x 5″ bag with Bag of Bones printed on the front in a red ‘Boneface’ type. The bags themselves are all over 30 years old and some show more signs of wear than others. The bags will contain a random grouping of cleaned bones selected for you by the artist.

Bag of Bones

The bags themselves are old. More than 30 years. I saved them from a project back then. Some bags show more age than others but that’s part of the charm. The bones are cleaned and old too. I will personally select them for you upon purchase. Bags will be signed and numbered upon request. There are only about 10 of these remaining.

Enhanced Skulls

Challenged by the Oddities and Curiosities Exhibition who initially felt that my work wasn’t weird enough, (Seriously) I developed this line of ethically sourced natural raccoon skulls. Augmented with glass and dyes, the cancellation of the Oddities show this year allows me to offer them to you!

Enhanced Skulls

I began making these for the Oddities and Curiosities show, when they told me the work I originally submitted, “Wasn’t weird enough”.  No one tells me I’m not weird enough !
