Mary Bacon Artist Statement

In my paintings am idealizing the universal flower or leaf, seeing the leaf or flower as an icon, an object of profound contemplation and meditation. Often the composition suggests a mandala or labyrinth shape. The lines of images within some of these paintings are like the lines of a musical composition, or lines of poetry. I am telling my story line by line, a story of the beauty I saw in a particular place and time.

Newer inspirations for my work include small modular botanical paintings to bring beauty into smaller spaces, and textural abstracts that represent to me the colors of the new energies being brought in by the Indigo Children at this time.

Indigo Child Series

Highly textured oil and mixed media on canvas.

Lately I have been very interested in the coming generation of young people in America, and their potential to solve the old ingrained problems in our country, problems that seem so sticky and difficult to the older generations.

The new generation has lots of wonderful energy, and I created this series of abstracts using the colors assigned to these types of energy:

Indigo, violet, and turquoise for the highest consciousness; greens and emeralds for heart and earth energies, yellows for the sun and the power of transformation; reds, oranges and pinks for action and purpose.

The rest of the colors represent the multicultural truth of our society, that together we the people are in the process of accomplishing the best ideals of America.

The first series of these paintings came out of me in a rush, and I realized afterwards that the shapes in the work have been influenced by a retro sensibility, the time of my own coming of age.

6" x 6" Starseeds

Each is a unique 6″ x 6″ oil painting, hand-painted by Mary Bacon. The series is made to fit into a small space but have a big impact. They are also made to be modular, and collectible. The painted image continues around the side of the 2″ deep canvas, so the painting has a 3 dimensional quality.

We are a way for the universe to know itself.

We are made of star stuff.

All the material in our bodies originates with residual stardust, making its way from soil to plants, and from there into the nutrients we need for all we do.

We are not figuratively, but literally, stardust.

We look at a beautiful flower or leaf, and recognize ourselves.

Mandala series

In my paintings I am idealizing the universal flower or leaf, seeing the leaf or flower an object of contemplation and meditation. The circular mandala or labyrinth shape organizes around a center that represents wholeness and health of the psyche.

I spend lots of time in nature. My work starts with drawing on my canvas, and then adding layers of oil paint to produce my images.

My paintings are oil on canvas. For the large paintings I generally use 3 layers of paint to create depth, dimension, and texture. My technique has evolved into a color-blocking style with very crisp edges.  The larger paintings can take several weeks to complete.

“Yellow Iris Mandala”

Oil on canvas, includes natural maple frame. 32″ x 32″ x 2″.

This is just one example of my many oil paintings.

Storytelling Line by Line Series

The lines within these paintings are like the lines of a musical composition, or lines of poetry. I am telling my story line by line,

a story of the beauty I saw in a particular place and time. The story can be read left to right, top to bottom; or seen as a whole.

There is a regular rhythm and repetition in the lines of a musical

composition and in classical poetry, and the even lines and the matching size of the sections in my paintings feel just right to me

for telling my story in both a modern and formalized kind of way.

I also enjoy exploring the close relationship between different plants, and sometimes the insects and birds that inhabit them. The new compositions that result are fascinating and compelling to me.

“Study in Oranges I”

Oil on canvas, 25″ x 37″ x 2″ Includes a black frame with gold edging.

This painting is a combination of tropical and local flowers. You can see Zinnia, Hibiscus, Black-eyed Susan, and Rose.

This is just one example of my many oil paintings.
