I tell stories through both paint and word.  It is through story that we best understand the experience of others and expressing stories visually embeds it in our memory. I tell the stories that I feel are important for others to understand and express them through paint and mixed media.  My paintings often take the form of portraits and collage-like imagery.

My stories began with family history and led to an exploration of cultural and community heritage, often through the lens of memory.  A series of interviews of elders fed a recent body of work, sharing stories of immigration and life in immigrant communities. That artwork, together with oral histories forms my recently published book titled We Spoke Jewish: A Legacy in Stories.

While my past work was often figurative, I have been moving in a new direction. I have been involved with the Jewish Artists’ Lab since it began in 2012. Our current topic relates to global warming and climate change, I became enamored with trees as witnesses throughout time. My most recent series relates to such topics as deforestation and flooding with trees as central figures in this drama that threatens to destroy our world.

Carrying the Future

36″ x 24″ Acrylic on Board
The Chinese carry many things on their back. In this region the women often wore a thick cape to support a basket, or in this case a child. I was struck by the gentleness in this woman’s face and the child’s eyes looking off into a different direction. (in a gold wood frame)

China Textures

24″x 18″ Acrylic on Board
This image is based on imagery at Sanbao, a ceramics institute where we stayed for a week. The windows were quite beautiful and coupled with the wooden beams, tile rooftops, brick walls and a hanging hat created an interesting textural juxtaposition. (gold wooden frame)

Cricket Man

36″x 24″ Acrylic on Board
This man was selling cricket cages in the Kunming market. I stumbled across him as I investigated the sound coming from his wicker cages. He is crouched in the resting pose which many Chinese use and reminded me a bit of a cricket ready to spring. Crickets in a cage are an old Chinese tradition. When he stood up he slung a pole across his back to which all of the cages were attached and strode off through the market. The writing behind him is a Chinese poem about crickets. (in a gold wooden frame)

Hangzhou Market

18″ x 24″ Acrylic on Board
Hangzhou, a picturesque town not too far from Shanghai, has a night market. The hanging lanterns glowed in the evening in this open air shop. (gold wooden frame)

Market Gathering

24″ x 36″ Acrylic on Board
This grouping is from the Saturday market. The hats are what we associate with China and are worn throughout the areas in which we traveled. The doorway behind them is lined with the red banners which are from the Chinese New Year (in a gold wooden frame)

Tibetan Woman

24″ x 36″ Acrylic on Board
This woman is a Tibetan from the Yunnan province and lives on the Tibetan plateau in the area of Shangri-La. The clothing is often very ornate with embroidery in rich purples and magenta. Behind her is a stupa, a Buddhist shrine which has prayer flags strung from its peak. Surrounding their simple wooden home were yaks and ponies with colorful blankets. (in a gold wooden frame)

An Interrelated World

Crow

12″ x 12″ Mixed Media
This collage was based on a photo I took at sunrise of a crow. The sun reflected off his feathers giving him a golden glow. I learned that with global warming, mosquitoes will be one of the creatures that will thrive. Mosquitoes spread an illness that crows are especially susceptible to so threaten the existence of the crow.  Available for sale separately or grouped with others in the series.

Fireflies

12″ x 12″ Mixed Media

Fireflies are another creature that are threatened by our destruction of habitat. For many of us, they bring back childhood memories when they were far more prevalent than they are today. That tree in the foreground is my ill-fated elm that fell to Dutch Elm disease. Perhaps this image is a meditation on what once was. Available for sale separately or grouped with others in the series.

Ghost Tree

12″ x 12″ Mixed Media
This collage uses an image of a tree juxtaposed with water to reflect the tree stump that remains, overtaken by the sea, a portion of a ghost forest.  Available for sale separately or grouped with others in the series.

Honeycomb

12″ x 12″ Mixed Media
If you look closely in the upper right you will see a bee against honeycomb. The existence of bees is threatened by environmental change. To lose them means we lose their important role as pollinators which creates a cascade of impacts.  Available for sale separately or grouped with others in the series.

Messenger

12″ x 12″ Mixed Media
This collage is composed of tree rings. It became a meditation on the idea of recording and sending a message. It is through these tree rings that we know the history of global warming. Available for sale separately or grouped with others in the series.

Skeeters

12″ x 12″ Mixed Media
This painting is a companion piece to Crow. In the age of global warming, mosquitoes will thrive. They spread a disease to which crows are especially vulnerable. Thus they play an out-sized role in threatening the existence of our crow population.  Available for sale separately or can be grouped with others in the series.
