My current work explores landscape and site-specific places, both abroad and local. These photo/paint montages reflect individual perception and memory of place. I photograph images over periods of hours, days, weeks or months. I deconstruct the photos, and then re-juxtapose the varying viewpoints and perspectives of places that have meaning for me. The work is a visual diary primarily of my travels and the familiar haunts that bring me back and through the present and the past—the cyclical passage of time.
Paint both unifies and differentiates the cut-and-pasted substrates of these paintings. The linear and irregular grid on which my paintings are based serves as both a formal structure for the compositions, and as a metaphor for the technological grid to which most of us are attached to and dependent upon—the separate “pixels” of our visual world that make up the whole.
My long-standing interest in cyclical processes, as formerly expressed in specific forms found in nature, has evolved into expression of the passage of time as related to place. Additionally, these paintings reflect not only decline due to this passage, but also progress, and sometimes rejuvenation and improvement.
