I have been obsessed with exploring motion control technology as a new art medium for nearly 30 years. What began as a challenge to connect an electric motor to the printer port of my PC in the ’80’s, evolved into a passion for creating self-built CNC machines to allow me to cut fractal shapes in metal and wood. Eventually, one of these custom CNC machines escaped the confines of my studio – to become a kinetic sculpture itself. Titled “Sisyphus”, it utilizes the same automation tech used in factories, but purposes them to creating ever-changing dune patterns on a field of sand. In 2016, we launched a Kickstarter campaign for Sisyphus kinetic art tables, designed for use in the home. It remains the most funded art category campaign in their history. We now manufacture and support Sisyphus tables in Northeast Minneapolis.
